Company Adopts Microsoft Windows CE Operating System
DENVER, Sep 27, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- First Data Corp. (NYSE: FDC) announced today the introduction of a proprietary point of sale terminal that offers enhanced functionality and expandability utilizing the Microsoft Windows CE 4.2 operating system. The First Data(R) FD-100 terminal has the flexibility to support dial-up or Internet Protocol (IP) communications and can accommodate an add-on module for Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) capabilities. The FD-100 offers enhanced transaction speeds along with ease of use and implementation for small and medium-sized merchants and will replace the company's currently deployed Linkpoint(R) AIO(R) terminal.
"Microsoft is excited to be such an integral part of First Data's FD-100 terminal," said Jane Gilson, director, Mobile and Embedded Devices Division, Microsoft Corp. "Through a tailored Windows CE solution, First Data was able to leverage a software platform with low life cycle costs and a quick time to market, to seamlessly support the applications, hardware and peripherals retail organizations want to use."
Produced in an ISO-9000 certified manufacturing environment, the FD-100 includes an integrated thermal printer, touch-screen technology and is off-the-shelf multi-language capable. The FD-100's five USB ports enable merchants to address future payment enhancements and link peripheral devices such as PINpads, check and wireless readers to the terminal. Each unit also comes standard with two serial ports and a 56K dial-up port.
With 64 megabytes of memory and IP application download speeds of six to 10 seconds, the FD-100 features substantially greater memory and faster communications than most POS terminals. All of today's electronic payment options -- credit and debit cards, prepaid cards, and electronic check acceptance -- are compatible with the FD-100. The unit is lightweight (less than 2 pounds) and has a footprint small enough to fit virtually any retail location (approximately 9" by 5").
"The FD-100 is a unique, feature-rich point of sale terminal," said Barry McCarthy, senior vice president of Product and Business Development at First Data. "With a consumer familiar interface in the Microsoft Windows CE operating system, a touch-screen display and five USB ports, the FD-100 provides merchants unparalleled flexibility and ease of use. In addition to the FD-100, we make a number of other terminals available to our customers from a variety of manufacturers to ensure that we deliver the best solution for our customers regardless of size, location or industry."
